EIN – Employer Identification Number
An EIN (Employer Identification Number) identifies entities for tax purposes.
You may use Form SS-4 to apply for an EIN.
The EIN is a nine-digit number (for example, 12-3456789) which assigned to:
Sole proprietors, corporations, partnerships, estates, trusts, and other entities for tax filing and reporting purposes.
When an LLC is categorized as a partnership or corporation, it is required to produce an EIN as part of the reporting process.
When a foreign entity elects to invest in the US, it must be issued this number.
You may apply for an EIN in various ways:
1) Apply for an EIN online – If you have a legal residence, principal place of business, in the U.S
2) Application by fax – you can receive your EIN by fax generally within 4 business days
3) Apply by Mail – Complete Form SS-4 at least 4 to 5 weeks before you will need an EIN.
4) Apply by telephone – option available to international applicants only.
